Cardiac MRI: You ask – we answer

As a private patient or self-payer, you do not need a referral form. However, information from your physician stating the medical problem as well as the completed request form and current laboratory results are necessary and important.

No, you do not have to be fasting. However, we ask you to avoid caffeinated beverages (e.g. coffee, tea, cola), chocolate and licorice on the day of the examination.

If you are taking beta blockers (e.g. metroprolol, bisoprolol, nebivolol, carvedilol, atenolol etc.), please pause taking them 2 days prior to the cardiac MRI.

If you suffer from claustrophobia or are very afraid of the confines of the tube, we can give you a well-tolerated sedative in advance. In this case, please be aware that you are not allowed to drive after the examination and until the sedative loses its effect, and please bring a companion with you to the examination.

In most cases, a special contrast medium without iodine is administered during the examination. This is very well tolerable and is also suitable for patients with kidney and thyroid diseases.

No, don’t worry: The 3-Tesla MRI works without X-rays and will not harm your body.

A cardiac MRI usually takes 25 to 40 minutes.

You will need to lie still during the MRI. Occasionally, we may ask you to hold your breath for a maximum of 10 seconds to allow for accurate imaging of the heart.
